Lowering your Subfloor for a Curbless Shower

My new post this month is about 3 different ways to lower your wood-framed subfloor for a curbless shower.

One of the methods that is covered is about using a subfloor lowering kit. Using these takes the guesswork out of how to perform this task. You don't have to wonder what type of blocking to use, what fasteners, how many fasteners, etc.

There are two brands of kits that I am aware of. One of them is made by Ebbe and the other is called Rapid Recess. This latter one is the brand that I am more familiar with.

Rapid Recess subfloor lowering brackets

Rapid Recess makes kits for 3 different types of applications: a center drain, a linear drain at the entrance, and a linear drain at the rear of the shower.

I've talked before about how I think a linear drain at the entrance is not a good design. But sloping to a rear drain with a curbless shower is not an easy task. So, I'm surprised they are able to offer a kit for this.

But once you've seen the design of this kit, it does make more sense.

In closing, if you are considering a curbless shower in the near future, you don't have to use these subfloor lowering kits, but I would encourage you to at least consider them for this application.

You Want a Curbless Shower? Here are 3 Ways to Recess a Wood Subfloor

Curbless showers are quite popular nowadays. It used to be that the only way that you could put one in was to cut the floor joists of your home.

This usually requires an engineer and, oftentimes a building permit. Not to mention the amount of work.

The post above goes over three different ways to lower a wood-framed subfloor so you can have a curbless shower. Hopefully, that's helpful.

Prism grout instructions:

Pour 16 fluid ounces of cool clean water into a mixing bucket and add 51 ounces (by volume) of Prism powder. Mix by hand for 5 minutes. Let it stand for 5 minutes and remix. If you want to weigh the powder, you want about 1800 grams.

For wall work, you may want to thicken it up slightly (caution: it is fast-setting grout). Add about 1-2 ounces of powder or about 50 grams. I wouldn't exceed 1900 total grams of powder.
